FEATURE/Thomasville Furniture Shares Center Stage With Meryl Streep, Paul Newman, Robert De Niro, Julia Roberts and More in New York Benefit Gala
THOMASVILLE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE FEATURES)--Oct. 31, 2001--Thomasville Furniture Industries Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Furniture Brands International, headquartered in St. Louis, has signed on as lead sponsor for an extraordinary one-night-only, star-studded production of The World of Nick Adams.

The performance will take place November 19th, 2001 on the stage of Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall in New York City.

Based on the immortal short stories by Ernest Hemingway with incidental music by Aaron Copland, the benefit performance features an all-star cast including Paul Newman, Meryl Streep, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Morgan Freeman, Brian Dennehy, Alec Baldwin, Robert De Niro, Joanne Woodward, Gwyneth Paltrow, and James Naughton. National Symphony Orchestra Music Director Leonard Slatkin will conduct the Orchestra of St. Luke's.

More than 2500 theatergoers are expected to attend the performance.

The evening benefits the Association of Hole in the Wall Gang Camps, retreats for many thousands of children stricken with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Founded by Paul Newman in 1988, the Association operates camps in five states, including the Victory Junction Gang Camp in Randleman, NC, and three in Europe. All children in all the camps are enrolled free of charge.

In addition to its role as primary sponsor, Thomasville is also providing furniture personally selected by the show's director, set director and Paul Newman to be used on-stage as part of the production's stage set. In particular, the set will feature pieces taken from the Ernest Hemingway Collection® by Thomasville. Those pieces used on-stage will be autographed by the show's cast after the production and auctioned off to further benefit the camps.

Chris Pfaff, President and CEO of Thomasville Furniture Industries, Inc., said that Thomasville's involvement with the production is especially fitting as the company launches the latest chapter in the Ernest Hemingway Collection, named Windemere.

"Thomasville is proud to sponsor this event, and we're delighted to be part of this outstanding collaboration of efforts to benefit the Hole in the Wall Gang Camps," Pfaff said. "The sponsorship is also especially timely as we introduce customers to Windemere, a collection inspired by Ernest Hemingway's youth spent at Windemere cottage on the waters of Walloon Lake. It was during these years that the great writer discovered his inspiration for such memorable characters as Nick Adams."

The World of Nick Adams has not been heard or seen since it was originally produced by the legendary John Houseman for a live broadcast on CBS television. A.E. Hotchner, who created the dramatization of the piece, has reworked his original dramatization into a concert presentation. Copland House is Creative Consultant, with House Artistic Director Michael Boriskin serving as the event's Music Advisor, the evening is produced by Kevin Duncan.
